Board of Directors

Our Board of Directors is elected to the Board by our shareholders each year. We currently have nine Board members, seven of whom are "independent" under the rules of the NASDAQ stock exchange. Our Directors are:

Lloyd H. Dean Lloyd H. Dean
Chairman
Lloyd H. Dean joined Cytori Therapeutics as a director in November 2010. Mr. Dean has served as the President/Chief Executive Officer and director of Catholic Healthcare West (CHW), the eighth largest healthcare systems in the United States, located in San Francisco, California, since 2000. Previously, Mr. Dean held positions as the executive vice president and chief operating officer of Advocate Health Care, and various management positions with the Upjohn Company. Mr. Dean is also chairman and director of California Health Association of USA, a director of Mercy Housing Inc., a director of Wells Fargo & Company, and chair of the board of directors of the Bay Area Council. He is a member of McKesson’s Advisory Board, the Health Research and Development Institute, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom’s Universal Healthcare Council, Governor Schwarzenegger’s California Commission for Jobs and Economic Growth, and the San Francisco Committee on JOBS. Mr. Dean holds a Master’s Degree in education from Western Michigan University and also is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University’s Executive Management Program.


Richard J. Hawkins Richard J. Hawkins

Richard J. Hawkins joined us as Director in December 2007. Since 2004, he has served as the Chairman and CEO of LabNow Inc., a diagnostic device company developing rapid, point-of-care, physician office-based diagnostic testing systems. Mr. Hawkins previously founded and guided the growth of Pharmaco, a clinical drug development services company where he served as Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer. He is a founder of id2, a pharmaceutical and biotechnology research management company, Sensus Drug Development Corp., a biotechnology company that was sold to Pfizer, and Covance Biotechnology Services, and served as Chairman of the Board for LoopOne, Inc., a shipping and logistics software company. In addition to his role as Chairman of the Board for LabNow Inc. Mr. Hawkins holds a B.S. in biology from Ohio University.


Paul W. Hawran Paul W. Hawran
Director
Paul W. Hawran joined Cytori Therapeutics as Director in February 2005. Mr. Hawran has served as Chief Financial Officer of Sequenom, Inc., since April 2007. He previously served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Neurocrine Biosciences, Inc. starting in January 2001. Prior to that, he served as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Neurocrine Biosciences, Inc. for five years and Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for three years prior. Mr. Hawran has also held executive management positions at SmithKline Beecham (now Glaxo SmithKline), most recently as Vice President and Treasurer. Prior to joining SmithKline (Beecham) in 1984, he held various financial positions at Warner Communications (now Time Warner) involving corporate finance, financial planning and domestic and international budgeting and forecasting. Mr. Hawran received a B.S. in finance from St. John's University and an M.S. in taxation from Seton Hall University. He is a certified public accountant and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.


Ronald D. Henriksen Ronald D. Henriksen
Director
Ronald D. Henriksen joined Cytori Therapeutics as Director in October 2002. He was also a board member of Cytori’s predecessor, StemSource, Inc. Mr. Henriksen has more than 30 years of experience in healthcare, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and consulting and venture capital industries. He currently serves as Chief Investment Officer of Twilight Ventures, LLC, and Chairman of the Board of Semafore Pharmaceuticals and EndGenitor Technologies, the latter of which he is also Founder and President. For more than 20 years, Mr. Henriksen held executive positions with Eli Lilly, where he served as Managing Director for Brazil, Mexico and Central America, and negotiated international contracts through Lilly Business Development. Additional Board Directorships include board member positions of PreMD, Inc. and BioStorage Technologies. Mr. Henriksen received his B.S. in Industrial Administration from Iowa State University and an M.B.A. with distinction from Harvard Business School. He also served as an officer for four years in the U.S. Navy.


E. Carmack Holmes E. Carmack Holmes

E. Carmack Holmes, M.D., joined Cytori Therapeutics as Director in August 2003. Dr. Holmes served as the Surgeon-in-Chief of the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Medical Center and holds the position of William P. Longmire, Jr. Professor and Chairman, Department of Surgery, UCLA School of Medicine. He joined UCLA in 1973 and has held professorial positions in the Divisions of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Surgical Oncology for over 30 years. He served as Vice-Chairman for five years prior to holding the positions of Chairman and Surgeon-in-Chief for the past ten years. Dr. Holmes is the recipient of numerous awards and grants and his professional memberships include the American Surgical Association, the American College of Surgeons and the Association for Academic Surgeons. He has authored 250 medical publications throughout his career and has been an internationally invited lecturer for over 25 years. His surgical training was conducted at The Johns Hopkins University and the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Holmes graduated from Duke University and holds an M.D. from the University of North Carolina Medical School.


David Rickey David Rickey
Director
David Rickey has served as a Director of Cytori Therapeutics since November 1999. From 1996 to March 2005, Mr. Rickey was President and Chief Executive Officer of Applied Micro Circuits Corporation, which provides high-performance, high-bandwidth silicon solutions for optical networks. Mr. Rickey served as Chairman of the Board of Applied Micro Circuits Corporation, as a Director of AMI Semiconductor, Inc., and is currently a member of the board of Netlist. Mr. Rickey holds two B.S. degrees, from Marietta College and Columbia University, and an M.S. from Stanford University.



Tommy G. Thompson Tommy G. Thompson
Director
Tommy G. Thompson joined us as a Director in April 2011. Mr. Thompson has been a partner in the law firm of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld since March 2005. He served as U.S Department of Health and Human Services Secretary from January 2001 to January 2005, and was Governor of Wisconsin from November 1986 to January 2001. Mr. Thompson has been Chairman of the Board of Logistics Health, Inc. since January 2011, having been President from February 2005 to January 2011. Mr. Thompson has served as a Director of C.R. Bard since August 2005; a Director of CareView Communications, Inc. since July 2005; a Director of Centene Corporation since April 2005 and a Director of United Therapeutics Corporation since February 2010. He also served as Chairman of the Board of AGA Medical Corporation from July 2005 to November 2010. He is a recipient of the prestigious Horatio Alger Award and has served as chairman of the National Governors’ Association, the Education Commission of the States, and the Midwestern Governors’ Conference. Mr. Thompson received both his B.S. and his J.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and also served in the Wisconsin National Guard and the Army Reserve.


Christopher J. Calhoun Christopher J. Calhoun

Christopher J. Calhoun is a co-founder of Cytori Therapeutics and has served as the Company's Chief Executive Officer, Vice-Chairman and Director of the Board since 1997. He previously served as President from 1996 through 1998. Mr. Calhoun is the co-inventor on multiple U.S. and International patents for medical devices and implant instrumentation. Mr. Calhoun was also involved in research and management for the Plastic Surgery Bone Histology and Histometry Laboratory at the University of California, San Diego. Mr. Calhoun is a co-founder and Chairman of the Board of Leonardo MD, and has previously served on the Board of Directors of StemSource, Inc. Mr. Calhoun received a B.A. from the University of California, San Diego and an M.B.A. from the University of Phoenix.


Marc H. Hedrick Marc H. Hedrick
President
Dr. Marc H. Hedrick was appointed President in May 2004. Dr. Hedrick joined Cytori Therapeutics as Chief Scientific Officer, Medical Director and Director in October 2002. Previously, Dr. Hedrick co-founded, and served as President and Chief Executive Officer of StemSource, Inc., a company specializing in stem cell research and development. Dr. Hedrick, a plastic surgeon by training, is a former Associate Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). From 1998 until 2005, Dr. Hedrick directed the Laboratory of Regenerative Bioengineering and Repair for the Department of Surgery at UCLA. Dr. Hedrick obtained his M.D. from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Dallas.
